Travel with Heart: Manenberg Rugby Boys and Girls Club

Travel has a way of introducing you to people and projects that deserve your attention long after the journey ends.

A few years ago, a message from Darren's best friend, Arthur, sparked something far bigger than a passing idea. Arthur shared a vision to start a rugby club for boys and girls in Manenberg, South Africa, creating a safe and positive outlet rooted in movement, mentorship, and community.

Since then, the Manenberg Rugby Boys and Girls Club has grown into a strong support system for young people who deserve more opportunity and guidance. Through rugby, these children learn teamwork, build confidence, and experience structure that changes what feels possible. The talent emerging from the club is remarkable, and it is easy to imagine some of these players becoming future standouts in South African rugby.

Much of the club's success has been built through the learners' own effort. Two years ago, the rugby field poles were made by the students with donations from Travel Sommelier and others. The gym and its equipment were constructed entirely through the pupils' sweat and determination, alongside generous contributions from supporters. This hands-on involvement reinforces responsibility, teamwork, and pride in what can be achieved together.

The impact extends beyond the field. Four under sixteen girls were selected for the Springbok age group development squads, and one under fourteen boy captained his provincial team. For all five, it was their first time leaving Cape Town to attend these camps. This year, the children also watched the Cape Town Sevens, received year-end awards from the Australian Ladies Sevens team, and participated in hiking excursions, training camps, and team-building weekends that broadened their vision.

One day, we hope this program produces future stars of the game. Its deeper impact, however, lies elsewhere - lives shaped, confidence built, and inspiration for the broader community.

When a cause moves you, travel becomes more than a trip. Find your cause on the road and keep ties to it.
