A Mother-Son Surf Journey

Caitlin and her boys recently spent school break away together in Nicaragua - time carved out with one intention: to be fully present.

Away from routine, something shifts. Days slow down, attention sharpens, and connection becomes less about planning and more about simply being together.

Surfing became the heart of the trip.

With local instructors along the Pacific coastline...stretching the same way it does into Costa Rica, only without the crowds - the boys learned to read the water and understand its rhythm. To wait for sets. To fall, try again, and not overthink the process. Little by little, confidence built. Not just in the ocean, but in themselves.

On land, the learning continued in quieter ways.

Turtle nests were tracked along the shoreline, watching life begin just beneath the surface of the sand. Spanish was practiced daily with warm instructors and staff who turned simple exchanges into steady progress. At night, they looked up at clear skies until Jupiter and Venus appeared, marking time not by schedules, but by stars.

The in-between moments carried their own weight. Learning pool in the cabana. Endless rounds of Crazy 8s. Afternoons spent making beaded bracelets and piñatas. Fresh guacamole made from avocados as large as cantaloupes. Post-surf churros still warm from the kitchen, eaten without rushing anywhere else.

It was not about any single activity. It was about the rhythm they built together - mother and sons, discovering side by side.

Caitlin chose to share the trip only after returning, letting the experience settle before putting it into words. A pause from everything constant, and a return to something simpler…presence.
