Inspiration: Rwanda

Mere feet away sat a silverback gorilla. His stature exuded powerful energy as he watched over his family, munching on bamboo and socializing playfully. He turned to acknowledge my presence with his small piercing, yet kind eyes.

This experience induced an emotional reaction from within. I felt a strong connection with this gentle giant that shares 98.3% of my genetic code.

Rwanda is a perfect example of how ecotourism provides opportunities for protecting gorillas in their natural habitat while also supporting the surrounding communities. This is one of the few destinations where the proceeds of the trekking permits go directly to the conservation. The government enforces limited access to this sanctuary; thus visitors play a vital role in safeguarding this remarkable species.

Known as the “Land of 1,000 Hills”, Rwanda offers so much more than gorillas. Treks through dense rainforest reveal twelve primate species, including chimpanzees and the endangered golden monkey. What may come as a surprise is the ability to witness Africa’s Big 5 in Akagera National Park. Thanks to repopulation efforts, elephants, black and white rhinos, lions, leopards, and Cape buffalo take refuge in these protected wetlands.

Polished luxury lodges allow access to the primary jungle where ecology thrives. Myriad flora and fauna attract the largest concentration of birdlife in Africa—many unique to this paradise. Bustling markets are the best place to immerse yourself in the local culture through its vibrant people and food—the story of Rwanda is told here.

The Genocide Museum located in Kigali, the capital city, is an emotive tribute to its war-torn past and provides an opportunity to educate and ensure history never repeats itself.

Experience Rwanda the TS way … seamless and secure.
