Just Back: Nicaragua

By Darren + Caitlin Humphreys

Take every preconceived notion you have about Nicaragua and toss it in the rubbish ... it is likely a misconception. If you are looking for a leading-edge destination close to the US, mission accomplished with Nicaragua.

This country remains relatively undiscovered compared to its neighbors, making it one of Central America’s best-kept secrets. To gain a sense of place, Caitlin and I spent time at eco-luxury properties such as Rancho Santana and Mukul Resort on the Emerald Coast, and Jicaro Island on Lake Nicaragua. Our impression left us wanting more and we are already planning to return with our boys for surf school!

The earth is alive in Nicaragua. We bore witness to the bubbling volcano as we walked around the perimeter of an active crater at sunset. We hiked through the cloud forest, whose canopy is coveted by sloths and monkeys alike. We spotted myriad flora, including vibrant wild orchids, appearing amongst the petrified lava fields.

The historic colonial city of Granada is a kaleidoscope of color drawn from the buildings and bustling markets that showcase bright textiles and handicrafts. Friendly locals welcomed us as we perused the different walkable sections of the city among ornate cathedrals.

The remote white-sand beaches draw all manner of surfers, enjoying right and left surf breaks, in a Pacific paradise. Water pursuits abound, whether on the Caribbean coast, vast interior lakes, or around the Corn Islands. Choose kayaking, paddleboarding, and diving, or on land enjoy golf, yoga, or pure relaxation in a lazy hammock.

Tasting the local food is one of the main reasons we love travel. Nicaragua's organic farm-to-fork culinary approach is a perfect match for both Caitlin and me. We also sampled their signature Tres Leches Rum Cake and of course, the iconic huevos rancheros. One can take immersive classes such as cigar rolling or rum tastings. Or, visit The Flor de Caña distillery where they sustainably produce the best rum I have ever had!

Our experience was exceptionally safe, and we felt comfortable throughout.
