to safari and/or the Cape Winelands. Being from South Africa, Darren has intimate knowledge of these cities. He knows the boutique hotels, staff, restaurants and sommeliers. He even has his own wine cellars at certain locations, which he encourages clients to “raid”. He can advise clients on where to go from a local’s perspective, whether it be the best spot for a cocktail and nightlife, the best beach to walk, the best breakfast spot on the waterfront, or the best spots to shop for local art and furniture.
Cape Town
One of the most majestic cities in the world, Cape Town is built amongst an entire, unique Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the only six Plant Kingdoms that cover the Earth. Cape Town has a bustling waterfront area with top-of-the-line food and boutique hotels such as the Cape Grace. Many celebrities have chosen homes that line this waterfront area. Camps Bay offers spectacular beaches, views, food and nightlife. Adventure abounds, from shark diving to paragliding and of course, hiking Table Mountain at sunset. Cape Town is rich in history. Visitors can tour Robben Island, see the Cape Malay district and visit the Castle of Good Hope. The art and architecture scene is blossoming, from the beautiful contemporary architecture of homes, to the open-air art market on the waterfront, to the custom furniture mecca in Woodstock. Cape Town is also a perfect launch pad for day trips to the wineries, penguin colonies, seal colonies and Cape Point.
Johannesburg
Johannesburg (“Joburg” to locals) is an important historical city. The Apartheid museum is a rich and moving experience and the Constitutional Court has a roof top café that offers a fantastic perspective. Darren attended the University of Witwatersrand (“Wits”), in the heart of the city, and started his career at the Joburg stock exchange; again, he is intimately familiar with the city and its offerings. Joburg is home to super-luxury hotels such as the Saxon and the Residence, which are oases unto themselves and can be a perfect way to adjust to the time zone at the front-end of a trip or enjoy a final last day at the spa before departing.
